Yorkshire, however, had a dreadful Championship season, finishing at the foot of the table. Despite finishing top of Yorkshire’s batting averages by some distance, Boycott was sacked at the end of the season, as Yorkshire looked to encourage younger players. Pro-Boycott supporters forced Yorkshire to reverse this decision. He had already been awarded a testimonial in 1984 and it was difficult to see how parting with their most reliable batsman would help improve matters. A defiant unbeaten 112 against Derbyshire was his first hundred of the season and although he “carried his bat” for the sixth time for Yorkshire it failed to save them from defeat. It was mid-July before Boycott struck his best form, with 101against Kent and an unbeaten 214 against Nottinghamshire in the following match. A fortnight later he amassed 541 runs in four successive innings, two of them unbeaten. He made 140 not out and 97 against Gloucestershire, although he was reprimanded for his slow scoring in the first innings. He followed this with 163 and 141 not out against Nottinghamshire. In the first innings he added 248 for the first wicket with Ashley Metcalfe who was making his first-class debut. This was the third time Boycott had scored a hundred in each innings of the same match. His seventh hundred of the season was an unbeaten 169 against Derbyshire which helped Yorkshire to save the match after they followed on 208 behind. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 533.
