Boycott played in four of the matches accorded first-class status, but his only score of note was 95 in the second innings against Western Province. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 508. The county had another moderate season, finishing tenth in the Championship, with the manager Raymond Illingworth, resuming his playing career as Captain, at the age of 50. Once again Boycott headed Yorkshire’s batting averages with 1,913 runs at an average of 61.70 and scored six Championship hundreds. His contributions were major factors in four of Yorkshire’s five victories. He also had the rare distinction of being on the field throughout both matches against Warwickshire. At Edgbaston he added 149 for the tenth wicket with Stevenson, to break the previous Yorkshire tenth wicket record, held by Lord Hawke and David Hunter since 1898. Boycott began the season with hundreds in successive matches against Northamptonshire and Glamorgan and his fourth hundred of the summer, an unbeaten 152 against Warwickshire, took him past Len Hutton’s 129 moving him up to seventh in the list of first-class century makers. His eight Championship wickets also made this his second most prolific bowling season. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 512.
