He headed the first-class batting averages with 701 runs at an average of 77.88. However, he failed to complete the tour, returning home after the fourth Test in India “physically and mentally tired.” In the third Test match at New Delhi Boycott scored 105, his 22nd and last hundred for England. During this innings he passed 40,000 first-class runs and also overtook Sobers’ Test match aggregate of 8,032 runs. He had an undistinguished final match for England, his 108th, scoring 18 and 6 at Calcutta. Boycott’s Test match career ended with 8,114 runs, the highest aggregate in Test match history, at an average of 47.72. Although his 8,114 runs has since been exceeded by several players, he still shares the distinction of having scored the most hundreds for England, with Cowdrey and Hammond.
