His total of 1,009 first-class runs at an average of 38.80 was his least productive full summer. Relationships at Yorkshire continued to deteriorate and towards the end of the season Boycott was suspended by the manager, Raymond Illingworth. Boycott played in all six Test matches against the Australians in what was to be an absorbing and eventually successful series for England. The second match, at Lord’s, was his hundredth Test match and in the fifth Test at Old Trafford he passed Cowdrey’s record of 7,624 runs for England. In what turned out to be his last Test match against Australia he scored 137 in the first innings and a duck in the second. In 38 Test matches against Australia Boycott scored 2,945 runs at an average of 47.50. His two Championship hundreds were 124 against 47
