Although his batting was inevitably not as outstanding as on his earlier trips he still managed 818 first-class runs at an average of 54.53. Political upheaval caused the cancellation of the Guyana Test and the sad death of Ken Barrington during the Barbados Test match naturally had an effect on the whole team. Boycott began the tour by scoring 87 in each innings against the President’s Young West Indies XI and in eight completed first-class innings outside the Test matches he exceeded 50 in six of them without ever going on to score a hundred. A defiant 70 in the second innings of the first Test failed to save England from an innings defeat and in Barbados Holding removed him for scores of 0 and 1 with some of the most menacing fast bowling in Test match history. Typically Boycott fought back to score his twentieth Test century in the next Test at Antigua. His unbeaten 104 in an opening stand of 144 with Gooch helped England to draw the match. He finished the Test series with 295 runs at an average of 42.14. 46
