Overall he managed 1,264 runs at an average of 52.66, the eleventh successive season in which he averaged 50 or more, to pass Jack Hobbs’ record of ten. In five Test matches against the West Indies he scored 368 runs at an average of 40.88 with a top score of 86. In the Centenary Test match against Australia, Boycott scored an unbeaten 128 in the second innings. This was his nineteenth Test match hundred and during this innings he passed 7,000 runs in Test cricket. His highest score of the season, an unbeaten 154, came in the last match against Derbyshire and his 135 against Lancashire was his ninth hundred in Roses matches.
