He scored hundreds against Tasmania and South Australia. His 110 against South Australia was his 117th first-class hundred, the same number scored by Sir Donald Bradman, and was made on the Don’s home ground. England lost all three Test matches against Australia although the Ashes were not at stake. In the second innings of the first Test match Boycott “carried his bat” for 99 in a vain effort to save the match. He was the first batsman in Test match history to be left stranded on 99 at the close of an innings. His performances later in the tour were moderate, although he finished with an unbeaten 43 in Bombay to help England to a ten wicket win against India in the Golden Jubilee Test match.
