For the second time in his career he averaged over 100 in first-class matches, with 1538 runs and six hundreds, heading both Yorkshire’s and the national batting averages. Surprisingly he also managed to top Yorkshire’s bowling averages with nine wickets and a career best 4 for 14 against Lancashire. His highest score of the season, 175 not out against Nottinghamshire, was his tenth three figure innings against them and the fifth occasion on which he “carried his bat” for Yorkshire.
