By way of contrast it was also Boycott’s poorest overseas tour. Perhaps distracted by events back in Yorkshire and the death of his mother, Boycott failed to make a single three figure score in twenty three first-class innings. His batting average of 26.65 remained his lowest in four tours of Australia. In the six Test matches too, he failed to find any fluency and his scoring rate was sometimes alarmingly slow. In the fourth Test he was out lbw to his first ball from Hogg, his only first ball dismissal in Test cricket. A stubborn 77 in the second Test was his best effort and he shared a partnership of 158 with David Gower to help England recover from a difficult start. At the age of 38 it seemed quite possible that his Test match career was drawing to a close. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 423.
