He missed all three Test matches against Pakistan and one against New Zealand. On his return to the side for the second Test match against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, he scored 131 to help England to an innings victory. During the season he scored a further five first-class hundreds, three of them in successive innings; 113 against Northamptonshire, 103 not out against the New Zealand tourists and 118 against Glamorgan. For the first time in sixteen seasons he failed to head Yorkshire’s batting averages. Off the field it was an unhappy year for Boycott. He was relieved of the Yorkshire captaincy at the end of the season after eight years in charge and Bob Willis was preferred as vice-captain for the winter tour of Australia.
