Yorkshire enjoyed their most successful season under Boycott’s captaincy, finishing in second place in the County Championship. His first hundred of the season was 152 not out against Worcestershire and it completed the set of hundreds against all the other sixteen counties. He scored six Championship hundreds, the highest being an unbeaten 201 against Middlesex and he made up for his first innings duck by scoring yet another hundred against Lancashire in the second innings. His opening partnership with Richard Lumb continued to prosper. On seven occasions they added over a hundred, with a best effort of 228 against Gloucestershire.
