He batted splendidly in his first two Championship innings against Warwickshire and Hampshire for scores of 86 and 73 and once again made a hundred against Lancashire. His second Championship hundred of the season, 129 against Nottinghamshire, included a tenth wicket partnership of 118 with Mike Bore. On three occasions during the season he was dismissed in the nineties, twice against the West Indians and once against the New Zealanders. He enjoyed successful Test Match series against both New Zealand and the West Indies. He headed the batting averages against New Zealand with 320 runs at an average of 64.00. His 115 in the third Test Match helped England to an innings victory and completed his set of hundreds against every Test playing country.
