He still managed to score 1,230 runs at an average of 72.35 and head the national batting averages. He made six three-figure scores in the County Championship, his highest being an unbeaten 204 against Leicestershire. As he often did, Boycott finished the season in sparkling form. This time his last five innings produced 528 runs. Injury meant that he played only two Test Matches against the touring Australians, on this occasion with little success.
