His second innings 110 helped Yorkshire to victory in his first match as Club Captain and also took his career average over the 50 mark. It signalled the start of a season of unparalleled personal success. Boycott scored 2,503 first-class runs with thirteen hundreds and became the first Englishman to finish a season with an average in excess of 100. Unfortunately, Yorkshire experienced the worst season in their history, finishing thirteenth in the Championship. His highest score of the season, 233, was once again scored against Essex at Colchester, and altogether he made eleven Championship hundreds. Boycott’s second century of the season, an unbeaten 112 against Middlesex, was also the fiftieth first-class hundred of his career. He twice “carried his bat” for Yorkshire, this time whilst making 182 not out against Middlesex and an unbeaten 138 against Warwickshire. His highest partnership of the season was 240, shared with Sharpe against Essex. He was also involved in a further thirteen three figure stands. He scored a hundred in both the Test Matches he played against Pakistan, an unbeaten 121 at Lord’s and 112 at Headingley. Injury restricted him to just one moderate Test Match against India. Boycott finished the season with five hundreds and two fifties in his last nine innings. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 259.
