In the Test Matches he scored 657 runs at an average of 93.85 and in all first-class matches, 1,535 runs averaging 95.93. A fractured wrist meant he had to miss the final Test Match in Australia when just 18 runs short of Hammond’s record tour aggregate set in 1928/29. He scored three first-class hundreds before the Test series had even begun, starting the tour with 173 against South Australia, and was involved in three partnerships of over 200 runs. The highest of these was the 242 he added with Edrich against Queensland. In the Test Matches his top score was 142 not out at Sydney, although most observers agreed that his 77 in the first innings was his finest display of batting. He scored two fifties in the second Test at Perth, and his final three Test innings were 76 not out at Melbourne and 58 and 119 not out at Adelaide. On each of these occasions he added over 100 for the first wicket, with Edrich. Wisden records that “Boycott put the seal of greatness on his batting” and the Press voted him the best batsman in the world. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 247.
