His first fifteen innings produced only 353 runs before he began a steady improvement, including 99 against Derbyshire. Then, in successive innings, he scored 148 against Kent and an unbeaten 260 against Essex, his highest score in England. He added 144 with Sharpe and 212 with Hampshire, during this innings. He was recalled to the England side for the last two matches against a Rest of the World XI, in a five match series organised after the cancellation of the scheduled South African tour. Scores of 64 in the fourth “Test Match” and 157 in the fifth made him an automatic choice for the winter tour of Australia and New Zealand. As usual he scored heavily in the Scarborough Festival, making an unbeaten 147 against an England under 25 XI, sharing a partnership of 157 in 80 minutes with Fletcher.
