It was the first season during which he wore contact lenses instead of spectacles and this may well have accounted for his occasional loss of form. His only County Championship hundred was an unbeaten 105 against Somerset at Headingley in August; remarkably the only three figure score made by any Yorkshire player in this competition. He “carried his bat” for the second time in his career whilst making an unbeaten 53 against Warwickshire. Boycott played in all six of the summer’s Test matches. He made two centuries against the West Indies but again struggled to find his best form against New Zealand.
