He scored seven hundreds during the season, four of these in successive County Championship matches, with a highest score of 180 not out against Warwickshire. He “carried his bat” for the first time in his career when he made 114 not out against Leicestershire at Bramall Lane. His 86 for Yorkshire against the Australians was their top score and helped them to an innings victory; Yorkshire’s first win against the Australians since 1902. He was less successful in the three Test Matches he played against Australia before his injury, scoring 162 runs at an average of 32.40 with a highest score of 49. On his return, for the last three first-class fixtures at Scarborough, he showed his usual appetite for runs - making with two hundreds and two fifties. He headed the national batting averages by some distance. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 178. Yorkshire v MCC, Lord’s, April 27, (29), (30) (Match drawn) 309-6d 179.
