Boycott was a major contributor in nearly every match he played. Sixteen first-class innings produced 1,154 runs at an average of 82.42 and in the Test matches he scored 463 runs at an average of 66.14. He began the tour with 135 against the President’s XI, adding 249 for the second wicket with Cowdrey. In three successive innings he amassed 498 runs, with 165 against the Leeward Islands, 243 against Barbados and 90 against the West Indies in the third Test. A generous declaration by Sobers enabled England to win the fourth Test, Boycott contributing a perfectly paced 80 not out. He finished the tour with 116 in the drawn final Test match.
