His form fluctuated throughout the season and his next hundred, 136 not out against Warwickshire, was seven matches later, in early June. Against Nottinghamshire at Bramall Lane in mid July he scored a hundred in each innings for the first time, although his opponents’ poor catching in the second innings greatly assisted him. Boycott’s 164 against Sussex was his highest score of the season and the 131 for T.N.Pearce’s XI against the touring West Indians included 20 runs in one over off Rohan Kanhai’s occasional bowling. He was stumped off the last ball of the over! His performances in four Test matches against the West Indies were fairly moderate, his best effort being England’s top score of 71 in the second innings of the Third Test at Trent Bridge.
