For the only season in his career Boycott failed to score a first-class hundred in an English summer, discounting his brief first season. His average of 35.29 also turned out to be his lowest in a full English season. In four Test matches against New Zealand and South Africa he managed just one score over fifty, 76 against the New Zealanders at Lord’s in June. By mid August his form improved, and his 146 to help Yorkshire win the Gillette Cup for the first time was widely regarded as one of the best one-day innings of the summer.
