In 1907 he gave up the Burrell Arms and took a job as coach at Oundle School. Next year found him coaching the Royal Engineers at their ground in Gillingham, Kent. Here Gertrude gave birth to their third son Cecil Frederick who would follow his father and brother into first-class cricket though with rather less success. A right handed batsman and slow left-arm bowler, in 1927 he tried, unsuccessfully, to join the county of his birth but subsequently played four matches for Derbyshire in 1928 and seven for Warwickshire in 1931-33. 47
