Famous Cricketers No 68 - Fred Tate
(6-ball) 4116.3 1189 1904 Although still economical and finishing above the other regular bowlers in the averages, the decline continued and by the halfway stage of the season Tate was no longer a fixture in the side. Despite the rheumatism, increasing weight and growing outside interests, Sussex were perhaps a bit hasty. At Hove, his 5-40 and 4-58 was largely instrumental in the defeat of Nottinghamshire. There were echoes of the past when, on the same ground at the end of May, he ripped out the heart of the Somerset batting in the first innings, bowling unchanged with Cox. Five of his six victims were clean bowled. When recalled to the side at Bristol in August, he was the best of the bowlers with 4-52 and 5-87 including the formidable Jessop twice.
