Possibly the events at Old Trafford in the previous year still troubled him. Even so, Wisden was possibly a bit harsh in describing him as “comparatively harmless”. Yorkshire are unlikely to have concurred after he had twice bowled them out at Hove with match figures of 10-75 and Sussex had won by four wickets.
