Sussex finished second to Yorkshire with seven wins and he could legitimately claim much of the credit. Once again he ended top of their bowling averages, eighth in the national table with 180 wickets at 15.71. He might have reached 200 but missed three games due to an attack of rheumatism. Only Wilfred Rhodes captured more (213) and he had the advantage of playing a higher proportion of his matches on the more bowler friendly wickets of the North. Only three others, Haigh, Llewellyn and Braund passed 150. Tate took eight or more wickets in every match until the Gentlemen v Players fixture on July 6, 7, 8. 37
