Wisden , never over-generous with praise, acknowledged him as “one of the best medium-pacers in the country”. Even better perhaps, his benefit match against Yorkshire at Hove in August, supplemented by collections, raised £1,051.18s, more than double the norm for a Southern county. Sussex were fourth again and while batting was still their main strength, the number of drawn county games was reduced to thirteen. Bland suffered a serious loss of form, but Tate now had the support of Joe Vine’s leg breaks (95 wickets) and the medium pace of the fast-improving Albert Relf (65 wickets). Once again Kent saw the best of Tate – 14-119 at Tonbridge, 9-176 at Hove. There were 12-wicket match returns against Somerset at Hove and Hampshire at Portsmouth as well as 11-88 when Cambridge University came to Hove, 9-128 at Leyton and 8-88 at Leicester. One of his few failures was in his benefit match against Yorkshire at Hove where he finished wicketless. Still firmly anchored in the lower reaches of the batting order, Tate played one important innings. At Hove, facing a Nottinghamshire score of 642-7, Tate joined Vine at 221-8. Together they added 138 of which Tate’s share was a career-best 84. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 223.
