That they had equal difficulty bowling sides out is shown by their record in the Championship of four wins, two defeats and eighteen draws. Tate worked harder than ever bowling 1143.5 of the newly introduced six-ball overs and exceeding his personal best with 141 wickets but apart from Bland who, possibly worried over doubts about his action, was expensive, there was little support. Combined, the pair accounted for 52% of the overs bowled for Sussex in the Championship. Although Tate had a large share in all four Sussex wins, some of his most notable efforts were in drawn games – 7-66 in Somerset’s first innings at Taunton, match figures of 10-137 v Middlesex at Hove. On the last day at Eastbourne, Essex set out to score 69 in the 55 minutes remaining, Tate (3-13) and Bland (2-8) confined them to 31-5. Tate’s best figures of 7-30 were not sufficient to avoid defeat at Oxford. Possibly in consideration of the amount of bowling he had to do, Tate reverted to his customary position of ten or eleven in the batting order. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 193.
