His newly acquired all-rounder status brought elevation in the batting order, albeit temporarily. Despite a mid-season change of captain – Murdoch stood down in favour of Ranjitsinhji after seven matches – Sussex finished fifth and for the first time since 1884 Championship wins exceeded losses. Tate contributed significantly to all but two of the Sussex victories taking ten wickets against Hampshire and Cambridge University, nine against Lancashire, Middlesex, Somerset and Worcestershire. He also took ten in the opening fixture against MCC. His three fifties were all in relatively high scoring games. One, his 59* at Hove against Somerset, was his share of an 80 minute 9th wicket partnership of 126 with H.R.Butt (75). Possibly his best all round performance was at Old Trafford – 4-66 and 4-27, 42 out of a second innings total of 106. The next highest score was 14. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 168.
