Tate took 100 wickets for the first time and Sussex climbed to sixth in the table. A major contributory factor was the arrival of a genuine fast bowler, the Lincolnshire born Cyril Bland, now qualified by residence. In an extended fixture list, Tate once again bowled more than a thousand overs but now the burden was more evenly shared, Bland getting through 1136.3 overs to Tate’s 1207. At Hastings when Nottinghamshire won by 69 runs the pair took all 20 wickets – Tate 4-59 and 6-77, Bland 6-85 and 4-107. When Sussex won by five wickets at Tonbridge they accounted for all but two – Tate 1-88 and 7-62, Bland 8-65 and 2-76. They also had a major share in the innings defeat of Hampshire at Hove, Tate 5-21 and 3-51, Bland 4-37 and 3-47. Tate (7-84) did well in the first innings against the touring Philadelphians only to see his side succumb to Bart King bowling with a crosswind. The ability to swing the ball was still something of a novelty. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 124.
