Even so, he finished top of the Sussex averages, which says much about the overall weakness of the attack. Not for the first time, Tate did well at Tonbridge bowling unchanged with Parris in Kent’s first innings and ending with match figures of 9-87. He also batted usefully, scoring 33 and adding 71 for the ninth wicket with Murdoch to give his side a vital 22 run first innings lead. Against Hampshire at Southampton he finished on the losing side despite match figures of 12-99. Tate was unable to repeat his earlier successes against W.G.Grace.
