Picked for only three of the first eight matches, Tate secured his place with 11-143 at Catford when Sussex won after following on and for the second half of the season he was the backbone of the Sussex attack. Parris and Humphreys were both relatively ineffective in the predominantly dry conditions while the veteran Shaw, not suprisingly, decided to give up county cricket after being called on to bowl 100.1 overs against his old county in bitterly cold weather at Trent Bridge and another 58.4 (unchanged) two days later at Old Trafford. Among Tate’s best performances were at Lord’s against Middlesex when, in addition to 6-55 (unchanged) and 4-85, he held on with George Brann to steer Sussex home by two wickets, 10-81 at Southampton and 6-64 against Kent when Sussex won on a typical flat Hove wicket. Sussex lost twice to neighbours Surrey. At the Oval where they were beaten by ten wickets, Tate bowled unchanged for 43 overs and finished with 7-94. At Hove where Surrey won by an innings he bowled 61overs for his 7-132. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 86.
