The arrival in the side of Alfred Shaw, portly at 51 but still the epitome of accuracy, together with Fred Parris who had struck a rich vein of form, were probably the main reasons. Whatever the causes, the effect was that Tate found himself squeezed out of the side. Possibly Murdoch was unimpressed or, as was suggested in the Cricket Field , Tate had lost confidence in himself but his performance against Cambridge University – a far from negligible batting side – was enough to indicate that his skill had not entirely deserted him.
