Famous Cricketers No 68 - Fred Tate
1893 Under a new, tactically astute, captain, the highly experienced former Australian Test skipper W.L. Murdoch, the 43-year-old lob bowler Walter Humphreys had his best ever season (122 Championship wickets at 16.53). For Tate the opposite was the case. He took only three wickets in his last six matches, 31 in all, and was dropped for the final two fixtures. As consolation, he again dismissed W.G.Grace twice in a match (caught mid-off, bowled by a “bailer”). Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 64.
