Bowling almost twice as many overs as anyone else, his eight hauls of five wickets or more included 7-17 (12-61 in the match) at Clifton when, bowling unchanged with C.A.Smith, the pair dismissed Gloucestershire for 37. W.G.Grace (9 & 6) fell to Tate in both innings. Against Oxford University his 7-33 (10-100 in the match) included a final spell of 7-7 in 9.3 overs. In the return match with Kent at Hove, the visitors, needing 139 in the last innings, were bowled out for 54, Tate (6-23) and J.B Hide (3-20) bowling unchanged. Kent might have done better had not C.J.M.Fox, like many before and since, succumbed to the pleasures of Brighton. 0* at the interval, he left the ground to lunch with friends and returned too late to continue his innings. In a non first-class fixture against Hampshire at Hove Tate’s second innings figures were 18-8-24-9. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 28.
