It was not until December 8, and the 7th match of the tour that he was fit enough to play - he made 22 in his team’s only innings. The next game was washed out; Bligh then made 45, “a well played and useful innings”, against XVIII of Ballarat. It turend out to be his highest score of the tour. A day after this match ended came what is now considered the First Test of the tour (v Murdoch’s Eleven at Melbourne). Bligh’s Team were thoroughly trounced, the captain making a moderate contribution - only 3 runs in two innings. There were two Odds matches in Tasmania (Bligh made 34 and 32 & 2) before the Second Test. Bligh failed to score, batting at number 7, but England won by an innings. For the Third Test, which followed four days later, Bligh dropped down to number 10. Due to excellent bowling by Barlow Australia were dismissed in their second innings for 83 - Barlow seven for 40 - and England won the rubber. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 73.
