It was to prove the most successful of his career. Not that that looked possible when he started the summer with a pair and then made 3 and 6 in the second match. In the third game - Cambridge v Yorkshire - his form completely altered. Bligh by “brilliant batting” hit 70 out of 272 in the first innings and then 57 not out out of 75 in the second. He followed this with 90 v Gentlemen of England, made from 150 put on with Whitfeld for Cambridge’s first wicket. His only century of the year - 105 against Surrey, was made without giving a chance. Unlike 1879, Bligh was picked for Gentlemen v Players at both The Oval and Lord’s. He again appeared in the Scarborough Festival at the end of the year. Bligh finished third in both the Kent and the Cambridge batting averages and at the close of the season was appointed to a Kent Secretarial sub-committee joining Lord Harris and Herbert Knatchbull-Hugessen.
