He did the ‘double’ for Yorkshire alone in the Championship making 1,368 runs at 40.23 and taking 100 wickets at 12.32. His 6-13 against Sussex at Hove was his best bowling. Wisden states that he was not quite the bowling force of Macaulay, Roy Kilner or Waddington but his figures do not really bear this statement out.
