Reduced to two days the County Championship was won by Yorkshire but the performance was, perhaps, slightly devalued by the playing conditions. All told he took 164 wickets at 14.42 and stood first amongst the wicket-takers. This included a match analysis of 11-52 in the opening match against Gloucestershire at Gloucester and he also had 8-44 in the second innings against Warwickshire at Bradford. He had not bowled so well perhaps since his first four seasons and his length and spin off the wickets showed him to great advantage. Owing to his efforts in an ordinary bowling eleven his batting seemed secondary and he made only one century, 135 against Hampshire at Dewsbury. 80
