It fell on Booth, Drake and Rhodes to carry the team and Wilfred certainly rose to the occasion. In taking 110 wickets in county matches alone he produced better bowling than for some time, his best analyses being 7-19 at Headingley against Derbyshire, 6-109 against Surrey at Bradford and 6-68 against Middlesex at Bramall Lane. All told he took 118 wickets at 18.27 each. He made two centuries: 113 against Sussex at Bradford and 105* against Lancashire at Hull – a match outside the County Championship.
