His bowling deteriorated to such an extent that he failed to take a wicket in all matches and only sent down 62 overs. He had only four single figure innings on the tour and scored three consecutive hundreds, 179 in the Fourth Test at Melbourne in an opening partnership of 323 with Jack Hobbs which is still the highest partnership for this wicket against Australia.
