It was the second time he had made over two thousand runs and more than made up for his disappointing summer in 1910. He also took more wickets, 117, which included 8-92 against Northamptonshire at Northampton. He had 7-16 against Derbyshire at Derby, 6-59 against Cambridge University at Fenner’s, 6-141 against Northamptonshire at Dewsbury and 6-29 (11-83 in the match) against Surrey at Headingley. This was altogether a far happier time and he was selected to visit Australia in the winter where he struck up such an admirable partnership with Jack Hobbs. He was given the match against Lancashire at Bramall Lane for his benefit and although the takings were only £750 a collection was made on his behalf and he was later given £2,200.
