He increased his wicket total to 182 at 16.95. He played in four Tests against the Australians missing out on one through injury. This being Jackson’s year - never losing the toss in all the five Tests - it is not surprising that England won the series although Rhodes had a poor return of only ten wickets. In the Championship he was ‘par excellence’. Forty-seven wickets in May contained 8-60 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston and he also had 6-87 against Worcestershire at Worcester. A quiet June culminated with 10-74 against Warwickshire at Dewsbury and he had 8-119 for the Players at Lord’s in July. He ran riot in August with 9-115 in the ‘Roses’ match at Sheffield, 10-115 against Surrey at Headingley, 10-145 against Middlesex at Bradford and 11-158 against the Rest of England in September at the Oval. All told he was, as Wisden said, challenging Hirst as the best all-round man in England. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 263.
