An unprecedented decision of a match being declared void was occasioned by the pitch being tampered with at Harrogate against Kent which deprived Rhodes of another seven wickets and Haigh of a hat-trick which he accomplished bowling slow leg-breaks, dismissing Hubble, Fairservice and Blythe. As if to show he was becoming a genuine all-rounder Rhodes’ batting improved out of all recognition and he made over 1500 runs with a highest score of 196 against Worcestershire at Worcester. His bowling fell off slightly - which is not surprising - but he still took 131 wickets. It wasn’t until the Essex match at Leyton in June that he had 5-68 in each innings for 10-136 in the match. He quickly followed this with 10-39 in 23 overs against Hampshire at Headingley and 12-128 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in the next match. After this he fell away a little but all told had a satisfactory season. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 227.
