Previously all tours had been private ventures led by a plethora of players and entrepreneurs. He found the Australian wickets to his liking and in the second Test at Melbourne took 15-124 to help England win by 185 runs. He also captured 31 wickets in the series which was won by England by three Tests to two. Outside the Tests he had the greatest successes on the Melbourne wickets which he found much to his liking. He had 8-84 against Victoria in the first game in November, then came the second Test and he followed this with 11-68 (which included 6-5 in the second innings) when Victoria were put out for 15 runs. He never achieved that amount of success on any other ground during the tour. 33
