He completed the ‘double’ for the first of sixteen occasions and made his highest score to date, 98 against the M.C.C. on the Nursery ground at Lord’s. He decimated Worcestershire at Worcester with his best performance of the season taking 14-211 in 94.4 overs but Yorkshire failed to win the match. In July he had the extraordinary analysis of 5 wickets for 4 runs against Worcestershire at Huddersfield. In consecutive matches at the end of July he took 23 wickets: 10-81 at the Oval, not one of his favourite venues - the pitches were too true - and 13-152 against Lancashire at Bradford. At the Hastings festival in September he had another good return, 13-118 against the cream of England’s batsmen dismissing Tom Hayward and Ranjitsinhji twice in the match and also getting ‘W.G.’ On his form in these early seasons he was an automatic choice for the M.C.C. tour of Australia in the winter.
