What is perhaps less well known is that he umpired in a number of matches. He stood with the other old Yorkshire player, Arthur Dolphin, in M.C.C. v The Army at Lahore, with Morris Leyland for the M.C.C. against Southern Punjab, Northern Punjab and Northern India all at Lahore and again for M.C.C. v Bombay Presidency at Bombay, the other umpire being unknown. With P.H.Davar he did the honours against All India (Indians) at Bombay and with C.M.Keddie for M.C.C. against the Europeans in the East in Calcutta.
