Famous Cricketers No 66 - Wilfred Rhodes
1926 At the age of forty-eight Rhodes was recalled to the Test arena for the first time since 1921 and his performance in the final Test helped England to win back the ‘Ashes’ for the first time since 1911/12. This was a precedent which thirty years later was exemplified by Cyril Washbrook, recalled to the side at the age of forty-one against Australia at Headingley, who put on 187 runs with Peter May after England had been 17 for three. Finishing second to Lancashire, Yorkshire had, for them, an ordinary season. Sutcliffe missed seven matches through representative calls, Rhodes six mainly through injury which at his age was to be expected and Kilner two. Rhodes made 1000 runs and did the ‘double’ for Yorkshire in all matches for the last time. He made one century, 132 against Essex at Leyton and his best bowling was 14-77 against Somerset at Huddersfield. It was noticeable that even though Rhodes increased his tally with the ball the other main bowlers experienced a falling off which was very worrying for the club in so much that the famous veteran could not go on forever.
