His performances for Yorkshire against Essex at Leyton in which he captured 15-56 including 9-28 in the first innings and 7-147 against Middlesex were rewarded by selection for the First Test Match at Trent Bridge against Australia, which was incidentally W.G.Grace’s last appearance. In passing it is interesting to note that these two remarkable cricketers had a first-class career span between them of 65 years. Rhodes dismissed Monty Noble twice in this match. A feature of this season was a return of 9-24 for C.I.Thornton’s England XI v The Australians who were dismissed for 83 which remained his best innings analysis. Trumper fell to him twice - 9
