If he had received only moderate assistance from the other batsmen, then surely England could even have won a series which was lost by the ostensibly decisive margin of 4-1. He began the tour with a century at Adelaide v South Australia and two games later he also reached three figures at Sydney in the New South Wales fixture, both scored from his customary number one position. However, in a side curiously unbalanced containing as it did eight players who would at one time or another be selected as England opening batsmen, it was decided for the first Test at Brisbane to open with Reg. Simpson and Cyril Washbrook and leave Hutton to bolster the middle order. England played well above their previous form on the tour to gain an advantageous position when the notorious Brisbane weather intervened to make the pitch extremely difficult for batting on. Hutton remained undefeated in each innings with his second innings score of 62* being hailed as one of the finest ever seen in Australia. Continually held back in the order in the hope that conditions would improve, he eventually went to the wicket with the score at 30 for 6, requiring 193 to win.
