After a moderate match at Lord’s for Yorkshire v MCC he was soon into his stride with big scores against the Universities and a further century in the Sussex match before the end of May. Of particular merit during the first month had been an innings of 93* against Essex on a wearing wicket which helped his county to a four wicket victory. Wisden records that “only fine batting by Hutton on a worn pitch gave Yorkshire victory … Hutton was magnificent, and did not make a bad stroke during three and a quarter hours.” His selection for the Tests against the visiting Australians was never in doubt and he duly scored a century on debut in an Anglo-Australian game, as did Denis Compton, in a high-scoring Trent Bridge 17
